The third of our twice-yearly newsletters is now available to pick up when visiting our showroom. These newsletters are being produced to keep customers uptodate with our activities near and far. Our Visitor Centre and the 'T' Cafe reopens on Good Friday 21st March 2008 for the summer season. We look forward to welcoming back old customers, and meeting new customers who may be visiting Kilburn for the first time. The village of Kilburn really is an embodiment of my great grandfather's philosophy 'industry in quiet places'.
Latest newsletter stories include:
The Tale of a Well Travelled Mouse - In 1945 a young married couple received a wedding present of an octagonal 'Mouseman®' occasional table. Together they travelled from the UK to Singapore, Germany, Libya, and back to London. The table was inherited by their daughter, and then travelled from the UK to Brunei, Norway, Brazil, Holland, Finland, and back to London. On retirement the owners settled just a few miles from the village of Kilburn. The table was rather 'world weary' so was brought to Robert Thompson's® for some TLC.
Continuing a Cambridge Tradition - In the 1930's Robert Thompson was commissioned to make three refectory tables for St Edmund's College.Thirty years later the company was asked by the college to provide an even longer table, 19ft in the length. All these tables are still in regular use in collge dining room. Now seventy years after that first commission the Mouseman® workshop in Kilburn is putting the final touches to another three 10ft tables.
Bespoke Commission - Robert Thompson's® regularly receives requests to produce bespoke items of furniture. One of the most interesting recently was from a customer who saw a kitchen sideboard, previously used by Robert Thompson in his own home and now on display in the Visitor Centre.
Our current stock list shows all pieces available now for immediate collection or delivery; additionally we have an extensive range of designs for special orders which usually can be completed within three months. We are always happy to discuss in detail and advise delivery dates for any bespoke commission you may require.
The Antiques of Tomorrow - The demand for previously-owned Mouseman® pieces remains strong, with early Thompson furniture commanding the highest prices. Robert Thompson's® is always on the look-out for interesting and sought-after pieces, which the company buys, verifies, dates, refurbishes, and then offers for resale (See our classic stock list ). Of particular note are a large carved fireplace made in 1939 and a pair of beautiful adzed dining chairs made in the 1930's. Previously owned stock tends to sell quickly so please contact us soon if you are interested in a particular item on the list to reserve it. The list is regularly updated and the available classic items are also now provided as a RSS news feed.
The Mouseman® Visitor Centre and 'T'Cafe re-opens for the summer season at Easter on Good Friday, March 21st 2008.
